Abstract

In November 2016 I was travelling in Cuba for artistic purposes. On 25th of November I flew to Havana from Santiago de Cuba where I had had my photo exhibition. The taxi driver who took me to Old Havana from the airport joked about Fidel Castro, hinting that he wished to get rid of Fidel but that Fidel seemed to be immortal.
The following morning my host in the ‘casa particular’ where I was staying had tears in his eyes. He explained to me that he had heard from the morning news that Fidel Castro had died. He said he really felt as if he had lost a father.
After Fidel Castro’s death in the evening on 25th November 2016, started the so called “luto” – the nine days lasting period of national mourning. Many typical Cuban activities such as playing music and dancing were forbidden.
I wanted to document these historical days of Cuba. All of these photos were taken in Old Havana during the six following days starting from the day of the death of Fidel Castro
